What to Wear to Pilates (and Do You Really Need Grip Socks?)

30 October 2026 · 4 min read

You don’t need special kit to start pilates, but what you wear does matter. Some clothes make the class easier, and some will annoy you. Here’s what works for reformer and mat classes, and what to leave at home.

The short version

  • Fitted leggings, or fitted shorts
  • A fitted top, or a vest over a sports bra
  • Grip socks for reformer (often optional for mat)
  • No jewellery, belts or zips
  • Hair tied low, not in a high bun

Bottoms

Leggings are the easiest choice. They move with you, they don’t catch on springs or straps, and the instructor can see what your knees and hips are doing. Fitted joggers or cycling shorts are fine too. Avoid very loose shorts, which gape when your legs are in the air, and anything with a big drawstring or zip that could dig in or scratch the reformer upholstery.

Tops

Choose something fitted. In pilates you spend a lot of time lying down, rolling and sometimes upside down. A loose T-shirt will slide up over your face. A fitted vest, a long-line sports bra, or a close-fitting T-shirt that stays tucked all work. A light layer for the warm-up is useful in winter, but you’ll probably take it off.

Grip socks: do you really need them?

For reformer: almost always

Most reformer studios require grip socks. They’re more hygienic on shared equipment, and the rubber grips stop your feet sliding on the footbar and carriage. If you don’t have a pair, nearly every studio sells them at the front desk, usually for around the price of a class or less.

For mat: often optional

Many mat classes are taught barefoot, which lets you feel the floor. Grip socks are normally fine if you prefer them, and handy on cold or slippery floors. Ordinary socks are a bad idea: they slip.

Look for socks with grips across the whole sole. Toe-less and open-top styles are a matter of preference.

Leave at home

  • Jewellery: rings and bracelets can catch on straps and scratch equipment. Large earrings get in the way when you lie on your side.
  • Trainers: you’ll take them off at the door.
  • Clothes with zips, buckles or rivets: they dig in when you lie on them and can damage the upholstery.
  • Strong perfume: classes are small, and you’ll be close to other people.

Hair

Tie long hair back in a low ponytail or plait. A high bun or claw clip gets in the way when you lie on your back with your head on the headrest.

What to bring

  • A water bottle
  • Grip socks, for reformer
  • A small towel, if you tend to get hot
  • Your own mat for mat classes, if the studio asks. Many provide them, so check when you book.

Do you need expensive activewear?

No. Branded pilates kit is nice, but anything fitted, comfortable and easy to move in works. Spend your money on classes. Our guide to reformer pilates prices will help you get the most out of that budget.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need grip socks for pilates?

For reformer pilates, almost always: most studios require them for hygiene and grip. For mat pilates, many classes are barefoot, though grip socks are allowed and help on slippery floors. Studios usually sell grip socks if you forget yours.

Can I wear shorts to pilates?

Yes, as long as they are fitted. Loose shorts can ride up or gape when your legs are in the air. Cycling shorts or fitted gym shorts work well.

Can I wear trainers to pilates?

No. Pilates is done barefoot or in grip socks so you can feel and use your feet. Wear trainers to get there, and take them off before class.
